John Hejduk, The Collapse of Time
Exhibition Pavilion
'The work of John Hejduk, architect, teacher, poet and writer was exhibited in the Front Members' Room and Bar. In his Victims project, he envisages a site - the former Gestapo headquarters in Berlin - on which may be created, over two thirty-year periods, a series of sixty-seven individual structures. The programme is presented to the city and citizens of Berlin with three possibilities: that all are built, that some are built, that none are built. The decision will be theirs. Each structure is individually named; the 68th construction 'The Collapse of Time' was built especially fir the exhibition in the front of thee AA's Bedford Square premises by a large and enthusiastic team of AA students and staff, supervised by tutors Raoul Bunschoten, Don Bates and Peter Salter; Frank Newby of F.J. Samuely & Partners was the structural consultant.
John Hejduk was one of the group which emerged in the early '70s as the New York Five, with Eisenman, Gwathmey, Graves and Meier. He has been Professor of Architecture and since 1975, Dean of the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York.'
